How to prepare collars

Find out how to prepare collars for your collaring day

Updated over a week ago

Understand the following:

Storing collars until collaring day

Keep collars hanging outside on a rail in maximum sunlight

  • Collars and weights will arrive at your farm in boxes on pallets.

  • Unbox collars straight away:

    • Collar serial number starting with 004, turn collars on with the magnet tool.

    • Collar serial number starting with 005, these collars may automatically turn on when placed in the sun. If the collar's LEDs do not start flashing on unboxing in sunlight, they will need to be turned on with the magnet tool.

  • Hang collars on a rail in maximum sunlight until they need to be used.

Sunlight is important for keeping collars charged

  • Collars are solar-powered; sunlight is required to keep them charged.

  • Hang on a rail with both panels facing towards the sunlight.

  • Collars can hang in a covered area, but for the majority of the day, they need to get sunlight.

  • Collars do not need to be within the shed's Wi-Fi range. Please prioritise hanging in the most appropriate location for maximising sunlight.

When to 'turn on' or reset collars with the magnet tool

  1. If the collar has a serial number that starts with 004, then this generation of collar can be reset or turned on with a magnet tool

  2. If the collar has a serial number that starts with 005, then this generation of collar is designed to turn on automatically in sunlight. However, if they have spent a long time in transit, they may also need to be turned on with the magnet tool. Use the magnet tool if the collar LEDS are not flashing.

  • Turn collars on when they first arrive on the farm.

    • Once turned on, hang collars outside.

  • If there is no LED or the Halter app prompts you to reset the collar, then turn on with the magnet tool.

Collars will remain turned on if stored correctly on the rail in maximum sunlight until collaring:

  • Collars will not be turned off by default.

  • Collars will not need resetting with the magnet tool if they were previously turned on and stored correctly.

How to turn on collars with the magnet tool

Use the Magnet Tool to turn on or reset your collars

A Magnet Tool that looks like one of the tools pictured below will have been provided with your collars. The magnets will be packed into a grey courier bag labelled "Magnets" and will be stapled to your boxes.

If you do not have one or have misplaced it, please contact support.

The Power Symbol

The power symbol is on the front edge of the left side of the collar – the side closest to the "R" in "HALTER".

  • If you are using the T-magnet, you will tap it to the power symbol.

  • If you are using the Sliding Magnet Tool, it will slide over the end of the collar until the magnet aligns with the power symbol.

Turning on Collars with the serial number 005

If your P5 collars do not automatically turn on when you place them in the sun, they can be turned on using the magnet tool.

The magnet needs to be placed on the opposite end of the collar from the serial number. Slide the magnet over the end of the collar. The collar will flash to show it's turned on.

If you have a collar with a serial number starting with 005 (P5 collar), this collar will not have a HALTER logo or power symbol, and the magnet will need to be used on the opposite end to the serial number.

Check that the LED flashes

When the collar flashes BLUE, this indicates that the collar has successfully been turned on or reset. It is very important to make sure each collar is turned on and charged before you start collaring. The collar will continue to flash blue until it has connected to your farm's Halter network. Once the LED flashes green, the collar is ready to use.

If the collar is flashing any other colour, see the table below.

Collar status LED indicator colours

πŸ”΅ Blue LED = Powered on but still connecting to the network - contact support if consistently blue for 30 minutes

🟒 Green LED = Healthy collar that is ready to use

🟑 Yellow LED = Low Battery, leave in good sun.

The LED will go Green when the collar battery is sufficiently charged and can be tagged on.

πŸ”΄ Red LED = Faulty Collar, do not use.

Separate faulty collars for collection by a Halter representative

⚫️ No LED = Please reset the collar using the magnet and place it in the sun.

OR P5 collars can be placed in the sun

If a collar continues to flash light blue after 30 minutes, it may need a firmware update. Move to a location close to a tower and message the support team to confirm.

Tip: To speed up the overall collaring process, you can attach weights to one side of the collar while you are turning them on. Click here to learn how to attach the weights.
